The first thing that came up when I thought of a cultural text
was Dexter. Dexter is a show on HBO about a serial killer that is a part of the
Miami homicide department. He aims to kill the guys that try getting away with
murder. This was the result of witnessing his own mother’s murder as a child. While
growing up he killed animals and his adopted father helped him become a master
of hiding his tracks. He goes through many obstacles and drama. He still
manages to survive although there are a good amount of people in the series
that find out what he is capable of.
Now what does this say about the society of today? Do we all
secretly want to kill or do crazy stuff like that? Well I hope not but I think
the explanation for this can be similar to why society was so obsessed with
zombies. People like that drama and intense story lines. They are able to feel
a part of this different world. Not only that but Dexter kills that bad guys.
That is something everyone approves of. Just like superman beat the guys,
Dexter gets rid of the bad guys. The question is Dexter kills and can also be considered
a bad guy, so why is everyone still on his side? If it was up to me to answer
that, well I think it’s cause he’s super cool. But it can also be the fact that
he tries to create a sense of safety in the community by getting rid of people
that can threaten that safety. Of course everyone likes the sense of safety. And
maybe that’s why people enjoy the show.
Evelina,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you're asking yourself questions within the text. The variagated nature of Dexter's personality, is indeed, an interesting topic of exploration. Rather, than have strict "good" and "bad" characters, TV shows n' movies are embracing the ambiguity and features more complex characters.
Nice work!
